The military helping Kakheti (Eastern Georgia) recover have left the region, seen off by the Georgian President and Commander-in-Chief Mikheil Saakashvili, Trend reports.
Kakheti was hit by hurricane winds and heavy rain with hail on July 19. Houses, roads, power lines, harvests and gas and water facilities were damaged and domestic animals were killed.
The president thanked the military for their efforts and promised a special presidential medal. The damage caused by the disaster was comparable with the war in August 2008.
Up to 2,000 soldiers, the fourth and fifth infantry brigades, a construction brigade, an engineers’ battalion, a battalion of the department of national guards and over a thousand reservists were mobilized with about 200 units of special equipment and vehicles. They spent a week working.
