Russia commemorates 10th anniversary of Nord-Ost terrorist attack

10 years have passed since the terrorist attack on the Moscow Theater Center on Dubrovka. The theater was hosting the Nord-Ost musical on October 23, 2002, when terrorists broke in and took over 900 hostages, including women and children. Commemoration ceremonies will be held on Friday, the day when the police broke into the building.

The Patriarch of Moscow and All-Russia Alexy II consulted former hostages. Russian People’s Artist Iosif Kobzon was involved in negotiations with terrorists with International the Red Cross officials. The woman released together with two girls named her son Iosif.

130 people died in the siege of the building. The police killed 18 female and 32 male terrorists. Three terrorists were detained.

A 7-meter tall obelisk was built at the building in 2003. A church was founded to commemorate hostages in April 2011. Construction of the temple will be completed this year.

A minute of silence will be held on October 26.

Vladimir Makeyev, head of the local parish, said that liturgy will be held at the wooden temple in the honour of the Iver Icon of Virgin Mary at 7.45 am. Blessing of bells will be held at 9.30 pm.
