IAEA: Time for Iran to give answers on its nuclear program

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, has lashed out at Iran, accusing the country of failing to comply with UN Security Council resolutions.

"The number of centrifuges installed by Iran continues to increase, as well as the enriched uranium volumes. This activity is in conflict with the resolutions adopted by the Board of Governors of the IAEA and the UN Security Council," Amano said at the opening session of the Governing Board of the agency.

The head of the IAEA stressed that the international organization cannot guarantee that Iran is using its existing nuclear materials for peaceful purposes, as the country does not provide a sufficient level of cooperation. "The agency cannot conclude that all nuclear materials in Iran are used for peaceful purposes," RIA News quotes the head of the IAEA.

Amano asked Iran to provide access to the Parchin military site, which, according to the agency's experts, may be used for the development of its nuclear program. "I repeat my request for Iran to respond in essence to detailed questions regarding Parchin to the Agency and foreign experts, and grant admission to the facility in Parchin, which interests the Agency,"  the head of the IAEA said.

He also noted that the Agency is interested in information on the research of a heavy water reactor. "The lack of relevant information on the IR-40 reactor at Arak increasingly has a negative impact on our ability to effectively control the design of the facility," Amano said.
