Constantine Kazenin, senior scientist of the Institute for Economic Policy named after Gaidar, Irina Gordiyenko, a journalist of Novaya Gazeta, Oleg Orlov, a member of the Memorial human rights center and head of the Goryachiye Tochki show, Yekaterina Sokiryanskaya, head of the International Crisis Group office of Russia, and Rasul Kurbanov, director of the Altair Foundation for Support of Humanitarian Initiatives and a senior scientist of the Institute for Oriental Studies of the RAS, are attending a round-table conference at the Independent Press Center in Moscow to discuss success and dangerous tendencies of Dagestan.
Attendants of the meeting focused on appointment of Ramazan Abdulatipov as the acting President of Dagestan in January, combating extremists and relations between Sufis and Salafis.
According to experts, Abdulatipov was appointed to combat crime and improve the economic situation for the Sochi Olympic Games. One of the experts expressed surprise that a civil war had not started in Dagestan in the past 15 years.
Experts discussed human rights activist Zarema Bagavutdinova, a suspect of a terrorist attack against police officers in Buynaksk and support of militants, and the phenomenon of female suicide bombers. They stressed that more efforts should be put into protection of human rights and combating clans.
