Dr. Shirin Ebadi, the only Iranian citizen to win a Noble prize, expressed her views on the developments in Syria and the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran at the first session of the 13th International Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Warsaw.
Ebadi said that "democracy is an important element of the world. People should have the right to say what they think, and a government should be able to listen and hear its people." The people of Syria, according to Ebadi, want Bashar al-Assad to voluntarily resign.
Regarding the situation surrounding human rights in Iran, Shirin Ebadi said that two people are executed every day in Iran. She also said that there are 3,000,000 children in Iran who cannot get a decent education. "We do not need nuclear weapons, we need schools and hospitals," Ebadi said.
