Ethnic consolidation discussed in Russia

The Russian Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations has opened a conference entitled ‘Solution of ethnic unity in Russia: Interethnic and migration aspects’ today to round up progress of efforts to strengthen multiethnic solidarity in Russia.

Maksim Shevehcnko, a journalist, is the moderator of the talks. The plenary session of the Council is attended by Gajimet Safaraliyev, Head of the Russian Parliamentary Commission for Nationalities, Valery Tishkov, Director of the Institute for Ethnology and Anthropology of the RAS, Arif Kerimov, President of the Federal Lezgian National and Cultural Autonomy, Aslambek Paskachev, Head of the Supreme Council of the Russian Congress of Peoples of the Caucasus, and Alexander Prokhanov, Editor-in-Chief of the Zavtra paper.

Safaraliyev pointed out some of the problems Russia was facing, such as low mobility of the population, the declining education of specialists, as well as the promotion of patriotism.Shevchenko noted that the main problem was inability to systemize problems of interethnic relations. He emphasized that xenophobia and hatred of migrants in Russia could undermine the Eurasian project. The expert said that mass media played an important role and were partly responsible for xenophobic trends. As an example, he reminded about Zhirinovsky’s offense of people from the Caucasus and Middle Asia.

Kerimov expressed confidence that dialogue at the conference was fruitful. He said that formation of the Council for Interethnic Relations was a big achievement for the strategy of development of Russia until 2025.

Chechen Speaker of Parliament Dukuvakha Abdurakhmanov attending the session expressed discontent of the Chechen population for trying to prove Russian patriotism for decades. He called for support to improve Russian President Vladimir Putin’s authority. The Chechen official emphasized that not a single ethnic-related incident had happened in Chechnya.
