Hanukkah was marked at Freedom Square in the center of Tbilisi yesterday. Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili took part in the event and congratulated the people present. He promised to protect the Jewish culture, traditions and religion, News Georgia reports.
Rabbi Bension Israelashvili called Hanukkah an event of light and victory of the good against the evil. It is marked in over 300 cities.
A group of demonstrators gathered in the area to protest against Margvelashvili’s participation in the ceremony. Levan Chachua, presenting himself as a former political prisoner and ex-candidate for president at the October 2013 elections, spoke out against the president’s lighting the Hanukkah candles.
