St. Petersburg to choose monument design for airborne troops killed in Chechnya

St. Petersburg will organize an exhibition at the House of Artists on February 25-28 to choose a design for a monument to the 6th company of Pskov airborne troops killed in the Second Chechen War, RIA Novosti reports.

The monument will be built at the Park of Soldiers’ Glory.

The airborne troops under command of Lieutenant-Colonel Mark Yevtyukhin were attacked by significantly larger militant groups of Khattab at Ulus-Kert on March 1, 2000. They stopped 2,500 militants, killing 700 of them. 84 out of 90 soldiers holding their ground were killed. 22 soldiers became Heroes of Russia, 69 received Orders of Courage, 63 of them were dead.

A memorial in the form of an open parachute was built at the central control post of the Pskov division. A street was named after the 84 heroes in the Staropromyslovsky District of Grozny and a memorial opened with a plate with each soldier killed.
