Speaker of the Lower House of the Russian Parliament Sergey Naryshkin has arrive in Israel. He laid flowers at the Memorial of Victory of the Russian Army over Germany, met WWII veterans, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres, visited the Knesset and had talks with Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein.
Naryshkin announced formation of the Israeli Office of the Russian Historic Society. He reminded that the Russian Historic Society was revived in 2012, during marking of the 200th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War.
Russia will mark the 100th anniversary of WWI this year. 500,000 Jews were fighting as part of the Russian army in the war. Russian and Israeli historians may cooperate in scientific and humanitarian projects, theater, museum and other sectors.
Boris Maroz, a Professor of the Tel Aviv University, proposed opening of Israeli and Russian archives, especially the archive of the Russian Defense Ministry and FSB. He reminded that Israel had attempted to study the six-day war of 1967 from the perspectives of the Israeli and Soviet military, but the project was a failure.
Professor Yefim Pivovar, Rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities, a member of the Council of the Russian Historic Society, noted the great work done in declassifying archives. He added that an enormous amount of secret materials had been published. The professor reminded that the RSUH was cooperating with the Tel Aviv and the Jerusalem University. The first Center for Jewish Science was opened at the Russian university over 20 years ago. It has published numerous guides for Russian Jewish-related archives.
Pivovar said that the issue of the Holocaust and World War Two was personal for him because many of his family members had been killed by Nazis. His father had ended the war in Vienna. Pivovar added that prevention of falsification of history was still topical and the RSUH was especially active in this mission.
