Georgian Interior Minister Alexander Chikaidze has confirmed ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili’s warning about a Euromaidan planned in Tbilisi. The minister said that hundreds of activists will put dozens of tents up on Rustaveli Avenue, demanding resignation of government, and then start shooting and blaming the government for any victims. Chikaidze warned that the police will not be idle and will prevent any coup attempts.
The minister noted that the Georgian opposition asked the Right Sector to send skilled militants from Kiev to organize disorder in the country. It is noteworthy that his warning was announced on the eve of signing the EU association agreement.
Georgia will mark the 25th anniversary of the 9 April 1989 tragedy. The civil war that started back then was notable for sniper fire at protesters on the Rustaveli Avenue.
Saakashvili’s supporters have already accused the interior ministry and the government of demonizing opponents. Zurab Japaridze of the United National Movement recommended Chikaidze to be checked for drug addiction. Other members of the Movement fear that the government would quit association.
