Ismail Agakishiyev, a docent of the MSU History Faculty, said at the 4th “Great Victory Achieved by Unity” International Forum in Kursk that retrospection was one of the elements vital for existence of every nation. The expert said in his report “Historical education as a factor to preserve memory about the common Victory” that the post-Soviet space needed to restore recalls lost at the end of the past century. In his words, the run for money and financial prosperity caused great losses.
According to Agakishiyev, recalls of the Great Patriotic War were especially important. He said that he had been teaching children history in the early 1990s and remembered that there had been little said about the Kursk Battle in textbooks of the time. This, as he says, created a vacuum in the historical memories. As a result, the country has young people with Nazi symbols bearing veterans and their children and stealing medals.
The 4th “Great Victory Achieved by Unity” International Forum of veterans, historians, politicians, public figures, journalists, experts, young activists and scouts has started in Kursk today. 21 delegations have arrived from the CIS, Georgia, Baltic states, Abkhazia and South Ossetia for the Forum.
The Forum was organized by the Institute for Eurasian Studies, North-South Center for Political Analysis and the CIS Interstate Foundation for Humanitarian Cooperation. Vestnik Kavkaza provides information support for the Forum.
