Rector of the Lomonosov Moscow State University Victor Sadovnichy said that the peoples of the Caucasus were an inseparable part of Russia and none of them wanted to separate from Russia voluntarily.

Vyacheslav Nikonov, head of the Duma committee for education, characterized the Caucasus War as one of the main events in Russian history. In his words, Armenians and Georgians had wanted the Russian tsar to protect them for centuries from the suppressions of Turkey and Persia. He believes that many existing conflicts in the region are a consequence of the Caucasus War.
