Uzbekistan jails six people for promoting extremism in Russia

Six people, including three women, have been sentenced to 9-15 years by the Qashqadaryo Province Court for promoting extremism in Russia and being part of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan terrorist organization, RIA Novosti reports.


They were proven guilty of terrorism, violation of the Constitution, formation of illegal organizations.


The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is headquartered in Afghanistan. It has contacts with the Taliban and Al Qaeda. It was formed by activists of forbidden Uzbek parties in Afghanistan in 1996. Russia, Central Asia and the U.S. recognize it as a terrorist organization.
