Russia and Ukraine mark the Christianization Day, dedicated the Equal to Apostles Duke Vladimir. It has become a state memorable day in June 2010. The Christianization Day has been a state holiday in Ukraine since July 2008.
Moscow will have the main celebrations. Kiev has been the headquarters of the patriarch and all members of the Holy Sinod, reminds Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, deputy head of the Sinod Section for Foreign Relations of the Church.
Moscow and All-Russia Patriarch Kirill started a wholly liturgy at the Christ the Saviour Church. He prayed for peace in Ukraine. Bells will ring in Russian and foreign Orthodox churches at 12.00pm.
Officials from Moscow and Orthodox churches of other countries have not been invited to Kiev for the Christianization Day for the first time since 2008, due to the recent death of Metropolitan Vladimir. Georgy Kovalenko, a spokesman of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchy, expressed hope that Russian guests will take part in celebrating the 1000th anniversary of Saint Duke Vladimir’s assumption.
Celebrations in Ukraine started at Vladimirskaya Gorka and the Svyato-Uspensky Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
