Since midnight, people have been arriving at the monument to victims on April 9th in front of the Georgian parliament on Rustaveli prospect. Former members of the national movement, politicians and ordinary people are laying flowers and lighting candles in memory of the fallen, Georgia online reports.
Giorgi, the son of the first president of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, has said that for every Georgian this day is related to the struggle for independence and he respects the memory of those who fought for the independence of their country, together with his father. 'This struggle is not yet finished. Those who think that it is finished are mistaken. We have to go through much to acheive complete independence' - he said.
Akaki Asatiani, the former speaker of the Georgian parliament in the times of Gamsakhurdia, also came. He said that it was a duty of every Georgian to visit this place, in memory of all who had fought for the freedom of the fatherland.
On the morning of April 9th 1989, Soviet military forces broke up a peaceful demonstration in front of the parliament building. 21 citizens were killed during the breaking up of the demo, and thousands of people on the square were poisoned by gas. On April 9th 1991, the State Council of Georgia announced this date the Day of Restitution of Independence of Georgia.
