The Department of Corrections and Probation of Georgia has proposed abolishing the Commission on Parole. The relevant draft amendments to the Code of Imprisonment were introduced to the Parliamentary Office.
As explained by the ministry, local departmental councils of corrections are enough to deal with cases on parole of prisoners, and existing commissions on parole only duplicate their functions.
According to Georgia Online, the commission is currently occupied with the general supervision of the activities of the Ministry of Local Councils. It is composed of a member of parliament, a representative of the Supreme Council of Justice, schools /educational institutions and NGOs, as well as two employees of the Ministry of Corrections and Probation.
