A female suicide bomber blew herself up in a police station in the central tourist district of Istanbul, the governor of the largest city of Turkey said.
The attack occurred in the Sultan Ahmet district, the historic center of the city. The explosives that the woman was carrying blew up inside the building. According to some reports, the attack was caused by a hand grenade. Two policemen were injured in the explosion, one woman died, RIA Novosti reports citing the Reuters news agency.
Agence France-Presse, with reference to the mayor of Istanbul, reports that the woman was equipped with a "suicide belt" and detonated it in the building. One of the officers died from his wounds in hospital, while the others sustained only mild injuries.
It is reported that the suicide bomber, whose identify has not been released yet, told the police in English that she had forgotten her wallet. Her identity and nationality have not been identified.
