Religious leaders speak out against vandalism at Memorial Mosque

The Russian Council of Muftis and the Muslim administration have spoken out against the vandalism that had happened at the façade of the Memorial Mosque on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow on January 11-12, TASS reports.

 

Unidentified perpetrators wrote offensive inscriptions on the façade. The police have video recordings of the incident, according to Deputy Head of the Council of Muftis Rushan Abbyasov.

 

Alexander Boroda, the head of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, said that the police should pay special attention to acts of vandalism and punish the culprits as soon as possible, especially in the light of world inter-religious and inter-ethnic conflicts. Boroda called for consolidation and peace.

 

Vladimir Legoyda, the head of the Information Section of the Russian Orthodox Church, reminded that the mosque was both a place for prayers and a memorial to Muslims killed during WWII. The official doubts that the vandalism had been organized by a group of plotters against inter-religious peace or Islam in particular.
