Iranian film "Taxi" wins Berlin Film Festival

The new movie "Taxi" by Iranian director Jafar Panahi has been voted the best film at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.

"Taxi" is the third work made by Panahi after he was convicted by the Iranian authorities for anti-government activities and received a ban on practicing his profession.

The Grand Prix of the Jury went to one of the most famous Chilean filmmakers - Pablo Larraynu -for his movie "The Club", which tells about a community of former priests who were expelled from the church for their misdeeds.

The award for best screenplay also went to a Chilean - one of the most famous masters of documentary films, Patricio Guzman, whose film "Pearl Button" tells about the history and life of the indigenous population of Patagonia. "Pearl Button" also received the prize of the Ecumenical Jury. The story of the life of another people - the indigenous population of Guatemala - "Volcano Ikskanul" by debutant Zhairem Bustamante was awarded with the Alfred Bauer Prize for the discovery of new ways in art.

Quite unexpectedly, the jury decided to divide all the rest of the main prizes among several pictures at once. So the prize for best director went to Poland's Malgorzata Shumovsky and Romania's Radu Jade.

The jury awarded the "Silver Bear" to the work of Germany's Sturla Grovlena Brandt, who worked on the movie "Victoria" by Sebastian Schipper.

Among the actors, "silver" was given to the duo of Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtney, who played an elderly couple in the movie "45" by Britain's Andrew Hay.
