Attendees of an anti-extremism summit in Washington have adopted a document focusing on prevention of extremism among young people. Russian FSB Chief Alexander Bortnikov called the problem a concern for all people present at the conference. Chechen Leader Ramzan Kadyrov said at a meeting with heads of youth organizations that work with young people was aimed at preventing extremist ideology from affecting them.
Kadyrov noted that young people aged 16-17 were especially sensitive to extremist ideologies. He wants public organizations to assist in hindering the spread of such ideologies. Loss of spiritual values and ethic orientation, violation of family traditions, drug addiction, promotion of violence and other phenomena are the main causes of the popularity of the ideologies. Psychologists name the family, street and school the main factors affecting the conscience of teenagers.
Kantemir Khurtayev, a member of the presidium of the Council for Affairs of Nationalities at the Moscow government, the head of the Union of Student Communities, said that the lack of a national idea in Russia was partly a reason for young people succumbing to extremism. He added that young people could not see social prospects, they were uninvolved in any activities, projects or events related to their self-development. The cause of extremism today is a lack of systemic work with young people, which had existed in Soviet times, believes the expert. Up to 90% of young people went though pioneer, komsomol organizations. Khurtayev reminded that the country had been declining in the 1990s. In his opinion, many people in poverty today are an excellent basis for cultivation of extremist ideas due to their hatred of the government and society.
Sergey Goncharov, the president of the Alpha Group Veterans Association, noted that the Islamic factor was dominating in world extremism. He pointed out that very many young people among Islamic youth living in Europe were going to the Middle East to fight in the ranks of ISIS. Goncharov assumes that propaganda conducted by true Muslims in mosques would discourage people from extremism. Khurtayev called for interaction with young people, their involvement in projects and events to help them realize themselves. Schools and universities, in his opinion, should be the places for that. He added that state education centers should be in close partnership with social institutions.
