Russia is holding a national day of mourning today for the people who died when a plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and representatives of the Polish political and cultural elite crashed in west Russia on Saturday.
All 96 people on board perished when the plane came down in thick fog as it attempted to land at an airport in Smolensk. The plane hit the top of trees and hit the ground some 800 meters from the runaway.
Flags are flying at half mast and entertainment programs on radio and television have been cancelled. People have been bringing flowers and candles to the Polish embassy for the third day running.
A minute of silence will be observed at all EU sessions on Monday.
The Polish delegation was on its way to nearby Katyn to take part in ceremonies to pay tribute to some 20,000 Polish officers who were executed on the orders of Stalin in 1940.
