Baku discusses the legacy of the Great Victory

International Conference 'The Great Victory Anniversary: living memory through the generations' opened today in Baku. The forum, held by the political science center North-South with the support of the International Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation of CIS Member States, will bring together experts, scientists and historians from Azerbaijan, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, veterans of the Second World War, and representatives of public organizations to discuss the contribution of the former Soviet Union to the victory over fascism, the historical significance of the Great Victory as the common heritage of the people of the former Soviet Union and its impact on people's lives.

 

The meeting will be held in two thematic sections: The memory of the war and the war of memory and The image of the Second World War in the media. Deputy Chairman of the Social Policy Committee of the Federation Council Lyudmila Kozlova, Executive Director of the Political Science Center North-South Yulia Yakusheva, the Director of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vyacheslav Danilovich, MP Elmira Akhundova, a war veteran, military journalist Alexander Gritchenko will make speeches.

 


The Deputy of the Department of Social and Political Issues of Azerbaijan Republic Presidential Administration, Arastun Mehdiyev, said the republic made a huge contribution to the victory in the Great Patriotic War. "This victory is our common heritage. In the Second World War 700,000 natives of Azerbaijan went to war, more than half of them died on the battlefield. About 130 Azerbaijani citizens were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union," Mehdiyev noted.

 

Elmira Akhundova regretted the fact that Baku still does not have the title of Hero City of the Great Patriotic War. "All Azerbaijanis remember the contribution of the Republic and the main city of the country in the Great Victory and are proud of the glorious history of their capital," she said.The well-known political scientist from Kazakhstan, Yuri Buluktaev, in his turn, said that the contribution of the people of Kazakhstan to the Great Victory is significant and timeless. "At the same time, you need to consistently deal with historical myths which have a negative impact on the perception of these events on the youth audience," he pointed out.Lyudmila Kozlova in her speech noted that the majority of the Russian population still believe that the victory in the Great Patriotic War was a common cause of all the peoples of the USSR. Vyacheslav Danilovich expressed concern at Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko's attempts to give a biased assessment of the events of those years.
