Russian Ombudsman for Children Pavel Astakhov said that weddings of teenagers aged under 18 were normal in Chechnya. In his words, the Family Code allows marriages of teenagers aged 17 in Chechnya, 14 in Bashkortostan and 16 in the Moscow Oblast, the Russian News Service reports.
Moreover, the ombudsman noted that there were places where women looked wrinkled at the age of 27, resembling 50-year-olds. The Constitution does not allow interference into citizens' personal affairs, he reminds.
Astakhov postponed his visit to Chechnya planned in June to July.
Last week, some media reported a marriage of the 57-year-old police chief of the Nozhay-Yurtovsky District with a 17-year-old from Baytarka.
