Russian mufti says polygamy will be recognized sooner or later

Mufti Shafig Pshikhachev, the head of the International Islamic Mission, has said that polygamy in Russia is a reality that will sooner or later be recognized. He noted that he had worked in Russia for 28 years and saw many cases of plural marriages, whether the law allowed it or not, Interfax reports.

The mufti reminded that polygamy was especially evident in Dagestan, Chechnya, and less explicit in Ingushetia.

The North Caucasus wedding issue arose around the marriage of Nazhud Guchigov, 57, the police chief of the Nozhay-Yurtovsky District, and Luiza Goylabiyeva, 17. The Head of the Chechen Leader's Administration, Magomed Daudov, attending their wedding called such marriages a norm in the Caucasus.
