Iranian artist Atena Farghadani has been sentenced for drawing Iranian leaders as monkeys and other animals. This was her protest against parliament's vote to restrict contraception and ban certain birth-control methods, the Washington Post reports.
She was charged with “insulting members of parliament through paintings” for drawing the officials as animals, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the international human rights organization Amnesty International.
Farghadani has been sentenced to 12 years and nine months in an Iranian prison, but according to some sources, the longest that she can legally be imprisoned is seven years and six months. In this regard, the family and lawyer of the artist plan to appeal.
