Azerbaijan celebrates Day of State Flag

Azerbaijan is celebrating the Day of the State Flag for the first time on Tuesday. On November 17, 2009 Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree making November 9 the Day of the State Flag. Last year the parliament officially approved the date on December 4. According to the Labor Code, November 9 became a public holiday, ANS reports.

After becoming independent, the flag of Azerbaijan became a symbol of
statehood. The flag demonstrates devotion to freedom, national and
cultural values and human ideals.

The Azerbaijani State Flag was adopted on November 9, 1918 after a
session of the government of Azerbaijani Democratic Republic and held
state status until April 1920. On November 17, 1990 the flag was
approved at the parliament as the State Flag of Nakhchyvan Autonomous
Republic. The parliament session was supervised by Heydar Aliyev. On
February 5, 1991 the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan adopted the law on
State Flag.

On October 18, 1991 Azerbaijani Republic, successor of the Azerbaijani
Democratic Republic, restored the state symbols, including the State
Flag. The law was modified with the rules of using the State Flag of
Azerbaijan, adopted on June 8, 2004.

On November 17, 2007 the Azerbaijani president signed a decree
establishing the Square of the State Flag in Bayil village of Baku.
The square has the world's highest flagpole.

The Azerbaijani flag is green, red and blue with a white crescent and
