Russian President Dmitry has called for tougher punishments for Russian security officials who break the law.
“Maybe there is a reason to think about increasing the responsibility of law-enforcers, not just policemen, but also the staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and all other forces. People who were appointed to enforce the law should understand that they have a greater responsibility for their crimes.” Medvedev told journalists, RIA Novosti reports.
The president said such a law will be introduced.
“Anti-corruption laws should apply to state civil staff, law-enforcing staff and the state military servicemen, such as the Defense Ministry staff, FSB staff, and other security services,” Medvedev said.
“The number of policemen arrested for crimes isn’t that great compared to the number of crimes by Defense Ministry and other security services’ staff, which remains high,” he went on..
“Another issue is how quantity will turn into quality, or how can initiating criminal cases effect the situation in general. Both the security services and the mass media should pay more attention, monitoring all the processes,” the president noted.
He admitted that public interest in the issue remains very high.
