Bulgaria halts participation in Burgas-Alexandropolis oil pipeline project

Bulgaria will not take part in the Burgas-Alexandropolis oil pipeline
project for ecological reasons. The pipeline involves transport of
Russian gas through Bulgaria to the Greek coast of the Aegean Sea.

According to Reuters, the decision was announced by Bulgarian Premier
Boyko Borisov.

Russia and Bulgaria signed a contract on construction of
Burgas-Alexandropolis oil pipeline in early 2008. The government of
Bulgaria of that time said that the 282 km long pipeline will be worth
$1 billion and will be of strategic value to Bulgaria, providing an
energy link for Europe.

The current government of Bulgaria fails to find economic fruitfulness
of the project because it will only transport Russian oil. The premier
had expressed doubts linked to ecology and uncertainty of the economic
efficiency of the project.

On November 13 during the visit of Russian Premier Vladimir Putin to
Bulgaria the leader of Bulgaria did not tell about the decision to
cancel the project, saying that it will be reconsidered from the
ecological point of view. The final decision was announced after
Putin"s departure.
