Medvedev urges prosecutors to prevent extremism

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated the staff and
veterans of the prosecution and noted that special attention should be
paid to extremism and inter-ethnic tensions, the press-service of the
Kremlin reports.

Medvedev noted that the prosecution plays an exceptionally important
role in strengthening Russian statehood. He expressed hope that the
skills of the prosecution staff and devotion to their duty will help
them fulfill their goals.

The Day of the Prosecution Staff was introduced in 1996 with the
president's decree signed on December 29, 1995.

Yuri Chaika has been heading the Prosecutor General's Office since
summer 2006. He was the justice minister before the appointment.
Chaika had major adjustments, such as establishment of the
Investigation Committee in 2007 to investigate grave and especially
grave crimes.

President Medvedev signed a decree in late 2010 turning the
Investigation Committee into an independent law-enforcing structure.
The prosecution will supervise the work of the committee.
