Chinese athletes have lost first place in the Olympic race to the US. The United States has won 81 medals, including 34 golds, in 12 days. China has 77 medals, 36 of which are gold.
Russia won 4 medals, including a gold one, on August 8, becoming third in the list of medal-winners (52), followed by the UK (11), although still being fifth in terms of golds. South Korea is ahead (12) and so are the British (22).
Maria Stadnik (Azerbaijan) won a silver medal in female wrestling under 48 kg.
Russian runner Natalya Antyukh won a gold medal in the 400 meter run with obstacles, beating Lashinda Dimus (USA). Antyukh won bronze and silver medals in a run from 4 to 400 meters in Athens 8 years ago, but she failed to enter the Beijing games. She won the Russian and European championships in four years.
Jumper Yelena Sokolova needed only 5 cm to win the gold medal. She covered 7.07 meters. Britney Riz (USA) won a gold medal. Janey Deloach won a bronze. Riz jumped 7.12 meters, Deloach 6.89 meters.
Lyubov Volosova (Russia) reached the semi-finals in Greco-Roman wrestling under 64 kg, losing to Tsing (China). Volosova won a bronze medal, losing to Eva Mikhalik (Poland).
18-year old Alexey Denisenko won a bronze medal in Taekwondo under 58 kg. He was beaten by Safvan Halil (Australia) 2:0, 0:0, 1:1. It is the second Russian medal in Taekwondo, Natalya Ivanova won a silver medal in Sydney 2000.
The Russian basketball team won in a match against Lithuania 83:74, entering the semi-finals. Villeyball players won in the game against Poland 3-0.
Azerbaijan won the fourth medal on the 12th day. Maria Stadnik lost to Hitomi Obara (Japan) in the final, earning a silver medal in the wrestling category under 48 kg. Maria was winning 4-0, but she injured her nose and lost. So far, Azerbaijan has two silver and two bronze medals. Its wrestlers, boxers, free calisthenics athletes may still win golds.
