According to an independent survey, 62% of Azerbaijan’s population believe the inaugural European Games will be a key opportunity to promote their country on the international stage.
They believe that the Games are more than just a sporting event, and will turn out to be a worthy investment which will assist Azerbaijan’s future development.
The survey, conducted by Rey Monitoring Center, also found that 67% of the population will watch coverage of the Games on television, with over 50% of the population following news around the event in the lead-up to it.
According to the results, approximately 1.5 million people across the whole of Azerbaijan will be interested in purchasing tickets for the Games, which run from 12 until 28 June.
Mr Simon Clegg, Chief Operating Officer at Baku 2015, said: “These results show that the majority of Azerbaijan’s population recognise just how important next year’s European Games are. Public support is crucial to the success of the event and it is vital for Azerbaijan that we deliver a European Games of which the whole country can be proud.”
Mr Rizvan Abbasov, Director of Rey Monitoring Center, added: “We conducted a survey before the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest and found that there is a very similar level of public support for both events. As was the case with Eurovision, I would expect to see increasing levels of public support for the European Games as we draw nearer to the event.”
A large majority of the population – around 81%– are confident that the Games will be delivered to a high level.
The nationwide assessment of public opinion was conducted from 14 until 16 June 2014 through an omnibus survey consisting of 1,200 respondents.
Baku 2015 will be the first ever European Games, an exciting and innovative new multi-sport event for the continent that will take place from June 12 until June 28, 2015.
There will be a total of 19 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and three non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes are expected to represent their nations over the 17 days of competition.
Nine of the sports will offer qualification opportunities for the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics in 2016. Those sports include archery, athletics, beach volleyball, cycling, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and triathlon.
Baku was awarded the Games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012. The Baku European Games Operation Committee (BEGOC) will organise and run the Games in co-operation with the EOC.
