Azerbaijan to host Open Gymnastics Championship tomorrow

The Heydar Aliyev Center held a press conference today, dedicated to the Open Gymnastics Championship starting tomorrow. Farid Haibov, the secretary general of the national federation, vice president of the Union of European Gymnastics (UEG), clarified that gymnasts will compete in five gymnastic disciplines. Haibov emphasized that the preparations for the Championship had taken a month, with assistance from the UEG. He added that boxing competitions will be held at the Heydar Aliyev Sports Complex and the Baku Crystal Hall in late April.

UEG President Georges Guelzec expressed confidence that the upcoming European Games would change the image of gymnastics.

Pierce O'Callaghan, the sports director of the Baku-2015 Operational Committee, said that the European Olympic Committee had been trying to organize the first European Games for 50 years and Azerbaijan’s acceptance of the project was a big responsibility. He reminded that Azerbaijan had spent over 2 years preparing for Games that would normally take 7. O’Callaghan said that the Azerbaijani people could be proud of hosting the first European Games, the achievements of the country, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva (the head of the Organizing Committee of the European Games). He added that the torch relay will start on April 25 and go through 51 cities of Azerbaijan.

10,000 volunteers will be involved in the relay. Over 2,000 drivers have been trained. Ticket sales will start in March. Agreements have already been signed with most European broadcasters, China, North and Central America.

Over 600 judges from Azerbaijan will be trained for the Games.

On April 1, acceptance of bids for registration of delegations will start. Azerbaijan will be represented by over 300 athletes, the largest team in the history of Azerbaijani sports.

O’Callaghan reminded that the athletes village will open on June 1. A new route network and a road to the Olympic Stadium have been built.

Baku will host the first European Games on June 12-28, 2015. Competitions will be held in 16 Olympic and 4 non-Olympic sports. Over 6,000 European athletes will compete.

The European Olympic Committee gave the honour to host the Games to Baku in December 2012.
