Switzerland authorities said that criminal proceedings have been opened against high-ranking FIFA officials on suspicion of corruption and bribery.
Several FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich today on federal corruption charges, including fraud, racketeering, money laundering, as well as corruption in marketing.
Russia's Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said that the arrests were not linked to Russia's successful bid for the 2018 World Cup.
TASS cited FIFA’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Walter De Gregorio, as saying "the World Cup in 2018 and 2022 will be played in Russia and in Qatar respectively."
