North Ossetia opens for foreigners

The governmental decree on foreign visitors of September 18, 2012, lifts limitations to foreign visitors to North Ossetia and the Alagir District (closed since 1992). The Mamison Resort construction started in the district in 2010.

Deputy Director General of the Northern Caucasus Resorts Vladimir Yevdokimov said that the decree was the first step to resolve the problem.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev opened transit to foreigners using such roads as Nazran-Beslan-Nalchik, Verkhny Lars-Vladikavkaz, Nizhny Zaramag-Alagir, Alagir-Ardon M-29 road, roads connecting Vladikavkaz and its airport in Beslan with M-29, railways of Nazran-Beslan, Murtazovo, Vladikavkaz-Beslan, Alagir-Elkhotovo and Gudermes-Mozdok-Prokhladnaya.

Mamison is being realized at the Alagir and Irafsky Districts of North Ossetia. It will cover 84,000 hectares, have 196 km of skiing routes, 50 elevators. The resort will see 30,000 people daily and will have 25,000 hotel rooms.

Russia plans to launch the following resorts by 2020: Lagonaki (Krasnodar Territory and Adygeya), Arkhyz (Karachay-Cherkessia), Elbrus-Bezengi (Kabardino-Balkaria), Mamison (North Ossetia - Alania), Matlas (Dagestan), Tsori and Armkhi (Ingushetia) and beach resorts on the Dagestani coast of the Caspian Sea. There will be about 1100 km of skiing routes, over 220 elevators. The resorts will have a capacity of 172,000 visitors daily and 510 million tourists annually. Realization of the project will provide up to 330,000 workplaces.
