Umansky: Azerbaijan attracts Russian tourists

According to Oktogo.ru, the number of Azerbaijani hotels booked by Russian tourists grew by 50% compared to the figure last year. Russians spending an average of 5 days in Baku pay $75 each daily for accommodation. Such an upsurge in popularity is a result of the upcoming First European Games.

Ilya Umansky, vice president of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, told Vestnik Kavkaza that Baku had indeed climbed the popularity ladder in the past couple of years.

It becomes the basis for many tourism routes, offering excursions. The tourism expert admitted that the European Games were a positive factor for rising tourism flows in Baku. In his opinion, Russia should organize more flights to Baku and connect Baku with more Russian airports.

Umansky said that his organization had held several advertising tours in Baku. Everyone is very impressed with the city, according to him. The vice president of the Association emphasized improving the technical element, hoping that Baku will be more accessible and affordable for tourists.

However, Baku cannot compete with Turkey and Egypt. Nonetheless, it is especially popular among post-Soviet destinations, Umansky concludes.
