Ilya Zankovsky lived in Tiflis, where he served in the Military Topographical Department of the Caucasus Military District. Frequent visits to various regions of the Caucasus enabled him to create a big series of landscape pictures of the wonderful mountainous region. Zankovsky presented his works at the Caucasus Society of Fine Arts and the Society of Mutual Help for Caucasus Artists. In 1886 he became a tutor at the School of Drawing and Fine Art of the Caucasus Society of Fine Arts, teaching young Caucasians about the art of his life.
