The word "Dagestan" has been known since the 17th century. It originates from the Türkic word dag - "mountain" and the Persian suffix -stan means ”land”, Thus, literally, Dagestan is a mountainous country.
The name of the region is not accidental: more than half of the territory of the republic is covered with mountains. The average height of Dagestani land is 960 meters.
