Hip-Hop style Purim on Poklonnaya Gora

By Vestnik Kavkaza

The most joyful Jewish holiday – Purim – was celebrated by the Russian Jewish Congress at the Holocaust Memorial Synagogue on Poklonnaya Gora in a hip-hop style.

On Purim, Jews are usually having fun and enjoying life, organizing carnivals and festive events.

For the first time in Russia, the Old Testament story of how Jewish sage Mordecai and his niece Queen Esther saved their people from the villain Haman, sounded in a new way – in the hip-hop style – thanks to the actors of the Brusnikin Workshop.

The scroll of Esther reading on Purim is one of the most important commandments of the holiday.

On Purim, it is customary to help the poor and send "shalahmunes" – edible gifts. At the event, the funds were raised for children from low-income families.

Purim is celebrated in early spring and often coincides with International Women's Day (it is symbolic that the central figure of the holiday is a woman, Queen Esther). This year, Purim is celebrated on March 6-7.
