Impregnable fortress of Black Sea Fleet

Historical land battery-35 was one of the most powerful fortifications of the Soviet Union. Its construction began in the early XX century for strengthening of Sevastopol as a base of the Black Sea Fleet.

By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Coastal defense of the main base of the Black Sea Fleet had a developed system of coastal batteries. If in the autumn of 1941 the city had 45 cannons, by the spring of 1942 151 cannons already operated on the defense lines. During the defense of Sevastopol, battery №35 was part of the 1st separate artillery division of the coastal defense of the Black Sea Fleet's main base. It has played a crucial role in the heroic defense of Sevastopol, becoming the backbone of the artillery system of fortress defense. During the occupation of Sevastopol, hospital and the command post of the commander of the 17th German Army, General Allmendinger, was set in the casemates of battery №35. On May 12th, 1944, last German soldiers in the area of battery capitulated. The battery was liberated.

After the war, battery №35 was not restored, but its casemates were used as cellars for ammunition. Today there is a museum, and its story deserves special attention.

In 2003, toponymy commission of the city administration spread appeal to the Sevastopol community in the media, asking to protect the historical monument. It took four years to coordination the documents, and in 2007, the creation of the Museum Historical and Memorial Complex to the heroic defenders of Sevastopol '35th Coastal Battery' started. Thousands of people took part in its construction - specialists of various professions.

The memorial complex was created on private funds. The main part of funds for design, construction, maintenance and development of the complex were provided by 'Tavrida-Electric' industrial group, which was founded by Alexey Chaly, who now heads the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol. Search, identification and burial of dead defenders of Sevastopol is still carried out today. And all this happens with the support of concerned citizens, who consider it their duty to remember the people who defeated fascism.
