“The Icon”: Russian-Georgian movie

Moscow held a special run of the movie “The Icon.” It is a joint work of filmmakers from Russia and Georgia who decided to show that spiritual ties always exist in relations between the two countries. The art director of the film, Irakly Kvirikadze, said that the movie tells about the fates of two women – a Russian and a Georgian. The second storyline is about a priest of the Georgian Orthodox Church who comes to Moscow to find and return an icon, which was the reason why Bolsheviks shot priests dead. The film tells about the icon of St. George, who is especially respected by Georgian people. This connects the main heroes of the movie.

The film was shot with the blessing of the Russian and Georgian Orthodox churches. According to the curator of the project and film director Rezo Chkheidze, the Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II personally read the script. He noted that there would have been no film if the patriarch hadn't approved the text.

"The Icon" was produced on the initiative of the head of the Union of Georgians in Russia, Mikhail Khubutia, who served as the film's producer. Zaza Merabishvili and Jaba Ruadze were the film directors. The film features Andrei Panin, Yekaterina Rednikova, Boris Shcherbakov, Nato Gagnidze, Anatoly Pashinin, Levan Khurtsia and Nick Chkhikvadze. The shooting took about two years and took place in Russia, Georgia and Greece.
