World Press on Iran, Turkey and the Caucasus (March 3, 2011)

On March 3, 2011, The Washington Post published an article headlined “Meanwhile, Iran runs roughshod over its citizens”. The author underlines that even though the uprisings in the Middle East continue to dominate the news, we shouldn't lose track of Mehdi Karroubi and Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the two Iranian opposition figures jailed by the Iranian regime. Their detention is unacceptable, thinks the author, and the USA as well as the UN should increase their pressure on Iran in order to improve the situation with human rights in the country.

The Los Angeles Times has published an article devoted to the situation in the Middle East, where oil-rich states have decided to support their poorer neighbours, in order to prevent social unrest in the region. According to Kuwaiti media, the plan is called the Gulf Marshal Project. In the framework of the new Marshal Plan, rich countries of the region will support Bahrain and Oman.

Today the prominent Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post published an article devoted to a recent statement by US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, in which she criticized Iran for trying to influence Arab revolutions. In the second part of the article the author comments on the recent statement by US President Barack Obama, who urged Israel to make progress in peace negotiations.

The Moscow Times has recently published an article headlined “A Recipe for Success in the North Caucasus”. According to the author, the recent events (series of terrorist attacks) have shown that the Kremlin’s North Caucasus policy has failed. He thinks that Moscow is deliberately turning the ruling regimes into archaic khanates that rely on ethnic and clan elites to ensure loyalty. Such a policy is disastrous, believes the author. He thinks that the only way to handle the problems in the Caucasus is to abandon the existing archaic and autocratic regimes.

Turkey's Hurriyet has published an article entitled “Iran: The big winner?” devoted to the current crisis in the Middle East. According to the author, the Islamic Republic of Iran has won a victory over the USA and Israel, whose influence on the regional countries is now diminishing due to the collapse of friendly regimes, such as that of Hosni Mubarak. At the same time, the author doesn’t believe that Iran’s power will increase, even though its role in regional affairs may become more important
