World Press on Iran, Turkey and the Caucasus (March 24, 2011)

The Washington Post published an article headlined “U.S. must take sides to keep the Arab Spring from Islamist takeover”. The author expresses fear that the so-called Arab Spring can lead to formation of Islamist states in the region. He also stresses the point that modern liberal approach to Islamist organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood is wrong. That is why he thinks the USA should prevent Islamists from taking power in the Arab world.

The Los Angeles Times published an article by Jonah Goldberg entitled “Obama's missed break in Libya”. The author supports UN resolution 1973 and the operation of the coalition. Still, he criticizes the US President, who “slowed things down”. According to the author, if things go well and quickly in Libya, Obama will win a lot of political capital. However, if not, then President Obama should step down.

The New York Times also published a series of articles devoted to the current situation in Libya. One of them is headlined “Hugs from Libyans”. The author admits that the question of whether the operation in Libya is necessary is legitimate. Still, he underlines that the humanitarian catastrophe in the African country cannot be ignored and welcomes the intervention of the coalition.

At the same time, The Guardian newspaper published an article entitled “There's nothing moral about Nato's intervention in Libya”. The author thinks that Nato’s intervention will cause an escalation of the conflict and further instability in the region. He also doesn’t believe that the operation is moral.

Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper published an article headlined “Open-ended period of uncertainty in Libya”. The on-going international air strikes against Libya have given rise to many questions, the author believes. According to him, some of the questions regarding the nature and possible outcomes of the operation have no clear answers. It seems to him, however, that Libya is entering a long period of war, unless Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi agrees to withdraw, but that is a remote possibility for now.
