World Press on Iran, Turkey and the Caucasus (April 15, 2011)

The Washington Post published an article headlined “As Bahrain stifles protest movement, US’s muted objections draw criticism”. The author touches upon the problem of the US response to the situation in Bahrain, where authorities take harsh measures to cope with public protest. The criticism is based on the fact, the US administration has supported Libyan rebels, but didn’t stop violence in those countries of the region, where ruling elites are loyal to the United States. The author admits that American administration has not made anything to improve the situation in Bahrain.

The Los Angeles Times also published an article devoted to the situation in Bahrain. It’s said in the article that the reason for uprising is people’s desire to improve economic situation, so that individuals would have more opportunities, to establish a constitutional monarchy and stop Shiit discrimination.

The New York Times published an article entitled “U.S. Groups Helped Nurture Arab Uprisings”. According to the author of the article, the role that American organizations that promote democracy all over the world played a very important role in the recent revolutions in the Arab World. This proves that ideas are much more powerful then armies, thinks the author.

The Guardian published an article headlined “Egypt will see this revolution through”. The author admits that new Egypt is facing a lot of challenges and now it’s not clear whether democracy will be established eventually or not. Even though there are some certain problems, the author  doesn’t believe that the Muslim Brotherhood will come to power and establish fundamentalism in the country. The recent polls showed that it has lost its credibility, says the author.

Turkey’s Hurriyet published an article devoted to Turkish  Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent speech in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Prime Minister said that Turkey is tired of continuing criticism and is no longer paying any attention to the European attitude to Turkish internal affairs. According to the author, Turkish public welcomed this statement.
