The Washington Post published an article devoted to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's harsh speech during the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Kazakhstan. Iran’s president called upon the fellow heads of state to form a military alliance in order to oppose unnamed Western countries that he described as “enslavers, colonialists, and invaders.” According to the author, Russia may stand behind this rhetoric, as the country vehemently opposes the US plan to establish a missile security system in Europe.

President Ahmadinejad’s address at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s summit in Astana is also discussed in an article published by the Jerusalem Post. “Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad launched into a brutal attack of the West at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on Wednesday, mentioning Zionism as one of history’s worst ills,” the author of the article writes. Ahmadinejad said that 60 years of Zionism has brought only humiliation and destruction to the region.

The Moscow Times published an article by Yuliya Latynina headlined “When a Murderer Becomes a Hero.” The article is devoted to the recent assassination of the notorious Colonel Budanov, imprisoned for raping and murdering teenage Chechen girl Elza Kungayeva. “There have been many cases throughout history of soldiers who have committed heroic
acts during wartime but who were also guilty of rape and murder. Budanov, however, is the only soldier who was hailed as a hero exclusively for raping and murdering. No other heroic wartime feat has been attributed to him,” Latynina says.

The Hurriyet Daily News published an article entitled “Why the AKP always rocks?” The victory of the AKP political party, headed by Prime Minister Erdogan, was not just magnificent, but also unprecedented. For no other Turkish party has won three elections in a row before with a steady increase in votes. The author of the article tries to find out why the AKP managed to receive 50 per cent of the vote for a third time. According to him, the AKP succeeds in every new election because it is simply very successful in building a more developed and wealthy Turkey.

The same agency published an article headlined “Ankara on the eve of critical decisions on Syria, Israel.” After winning the parliamentary elections, the Turkish authorities speedily returned to their original agenda, the author writes. One of the most important issues is the adoption of a certain policy towards Syria, where the government is taking harsh measures in order to suppress the popular uprising. Turkey’s main aim is to prevent the region from a deeper instability, the author believes.
