"Since President Assad initiated his ferocious repression of protesters in March 2011, more than 70,000 Syrians have been killed and well over a million made homeless. Western diplomacy has proved fruitless in arresting Assad’s assaults. It needs to be backed by military aid to rebel forces, not least because the humanitarian catastrophe created by Assad threatens now to escalate beyond Syria’s borders," an article headlined 'Syria’s Spread of Destruction' published by The Times reads.
While the United States and its allies are doing their best to stay away from the crisis, Iran and Hezbollah are taking an active part in it, the author of the article notes.
The longer the Assad regime exists, the greater the losses of the Syrian people and the whole region will be, the author believes. The fact that there is now foreign military intervention doesn't mean that nothing is happening, but it means that the chances for a peaceful way out of the conflict are becoming worse.
If no action is taken, Syria may soon become a collapsed state and a constant source of instability in the region.
