World press on G20 summit (September 5, 2013)

“Syria dominates G20 opening day” is an article published by the Financial Times today on the agenda of the G20 summit opening in St. Petersburg today.

“Before the Syria crisis escalated, the G20 gathering was set to focus on concerns about the tapering of monetary policy in the US, global growth and the taxation of multinational corporations. But Syria, not on the official agenda, is now set to dominate discussion at the economic forum and raise the already fraught diplomatic stakes,” the article reads.

“We would not anticipate every member of the G20 agreeing about the way forward in Syria, particularly given the Russian position,” the article quotes Ben Rhodes, the press adivser of Obama.

“Earlier on Thursday Chinese officials joined Russia in speaking out strongly against military action against the Assad regime, saying it would hurt the world economy and push up oil prices,” the article states.

“Military action would have a negative impact on the global economy, especially on the oil price – it will cause a hike in the oil price,” the article quotes the Chinese vice-finance minister Zhu Guangyao.
