The Wall Street Journal published an article by Carol Lee headlined "Joe Biden Arrives in Ukraine as U.S. Weighs New Russia Sanctions."
"Vice President Joe Biden arrived in Ukraine on Monday for two days of talks as the U.S. prepares for efforts to address Ukraine's energy needs and weighs new sanctions against Russia over continued unrest in the wake of Moscow's agreement last week to tamp down tensions," the article begins.
At the same a group of US energy experts arrived in the country in order to secure short-term gas deliveries to Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal cites a source in the Obama administration as saying.
The US is not satisfied with the progress achieved at the Geneva meeting, Carol Lee writes. According to the author, the White House will make Russia to "pay" for its policies within the next several days.
Die Welt published an article devoted to the situation in the Eastern Ukrainian town of Slavyansk. The town has been under the militant's control for two weeks, the author of the article, Julia Smirnova, informs.
The situation in Slavyansk differs greatly from that in other cities of Eastern Ukraine. Pro-Russian militants have captured the whole town, halted Ukrainian TV channels and detained Mayor Nelya Shtepa. Independent media are under constant pressure and an atmosphere of terror and fear has engulfed the town, the author writes.
There is no decisive evidence that the militants are in fact Russian troops, but there are some signs that it is so, the author of the article cites former German Consul General in Ukraine and head of the OSCE mission Klaus Zillinkens as saying.
