Azerbaijan's Greco-Roman wrestling team becomes European champion
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe European Wrestling Championship has ended in Budapest. Greco-Roman wrestling team of Azerbaijan achieved historical success in the continental championship.
Under the leadership of head coach Alexander Tarakanov, senior coach Rovshan Bayramov and coach Gasan Aliyev, eight members of the Azerbaijani team, represented by 10 wrestlers, won medals. Eldaniz Azizli (55 kg), Rafig Huseynov (82 kg) won gold, Taleh Mammadov (63 kg) won silver, Murad Mammadov (60 kg), Hasrat Jafarov (67 kg), Ulvi Ganizade (72 kg), Sanan Suleymanov (77 kg) and Islam Abbasov (87 kg) - bronze medals. They brought the team 25, 20 and 15 points respectively. Murat Lokyayev (97 kg) and Beka Kandelaki (130 kg), who took fifth place, earned another 10 points for the team.
Thus, the Azerbaijani team, having scored 165 points, for the first time in its history became the European champion in the team event. Turkey is in second place with 150 points, and Georgia is in third with 114 points. Azerbaijan has set a new record in the history of Greco-Roman wrestling both in terms of quantity and quality of medals, as well as in terms of points scored.
A few days ago, Azerbaijani freestyle wrestling team also became the European champion in the team competition.
