Since 2020, 421 people have been injured by landmines in Azerbaijan, 72 of whom have lost their lives, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President and Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, reported on April 3, marking the International Day for Mine Awareness.

"Around 12% of Azerbaijan’s territory is contaminated with 1.5 million more landmines by Armenia during a 30-year-long occupation. Since 2020 — in peacetime — 400+ civilians have been killed or severely injured"

Hajiyev said, emphasizing that mine contamination is hindering recovery and reconstruction in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur.

"Demining is not only a technical process. It is about justice. It is about human dignity. It is about the fundamental right of people to return home safely",

Hikmet Hajiyev added.
