The other day the head of the opposition Free Democrats Party, Irakli Alasania, visited the USA, where he met with senator McCain, considered the most active lobbyist for Saakashvili in Washington.
While in the US, Alasania was also invited to another, very prestigious event: the annual breakfast with the president and the American establishment. Alasania was the first Georgian politician to be invited to this event. It is most likely that the Americans prefer Irakli Alasania to all the other Georgian opposition, as Alasania is a representative of the Tbilisi elite youth of the Soviet and post-Soviet era. In 1995 he graduated with distinction from Tbilisi State University with a degree in international law. In 1994-1998 he worked in the Ministry of State Security and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2002 he was appointed deputy minister of state security, and since 2004 has headed the pro-Georgian government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia (in exile). From 2006 to 2008 Alasania represented Georgia at the UN.
David Zalkaliani, one of the closest team-mates of Alasania, told VK about his visit to the US. Zaklaliani is an advisor on international issues and a former Georgian ambassador to Belarus (2008).
According to Zalkaliani, Alasania was invited to a breakfast, organized every year by US senators with the participation of the president. The organizers of the breakfast often invite foreign visitors who have made or can make a significant contribution to the development of relations with the United States. During the breakfast, Alasania told his colleagues that democratization in Georgia should not take place through revolution, but by democratic means. According to Zalkaliani, the Americans will support only this method of changing power in Georgia, and will not welcome another revolution. In the view of the diplomat, the invitation of Alasania to such an important political event points to the fact that Washington considers Alasania to be a consistent and reliable politician.
